Europe and a globalising world

Research and education at UM have been thematic, multidisciplinary, and inspired by social themes. UM distinguishes itself by focusing on three main research themes (i.e. ‘Quality of life’, ‘Europe and a Globalising World’, and ‘Learning and innovation’) which are studied on the basis of different disciplines at all relevant levels. During the last decades the European integration process and the position of Europe as a specific actor on the global scene has increased enormously. Most research questions concern the intrinsic value of having a European Union and the character and the direction of the European integration process. Questions arising from this perspective deal with the role of Europe’s corporations in developing a sustainable global economy and the configuration of service-and supply chains to maintain Europe’s competitive position in the world. Specific issues that deserve particular attention are responsible investing, green buildings, sustainable supply chains, responsible leadership, employee well-being as well as the value of complex service systems.

Sustainability has become firmly ensconced in the world of economists. These days, no calculation is made without accounting for environmental effects, corporate responsibility and the long term. “The realisation has grown rapidly”, says Rob Bauer, team leader of Sustainable Development and professor of Finance at the Maastricht University School of Business and Economics (SBE). “Which is great, because economists can and must play an important role in keeping this planet liveable.”

‘My pension? Hmmm... I’ll look at it by that time.’ ‘Let’s worry about that when we get there.’ Particularly people who have a while to go until retirement, tend to stick their heads in the sand when it comes to their financial future. Somewhere in their mind they might have a voice telling them that this is not wise, but that voice is skilfully silenced. Lisa Brüggen, researcher at Maastricht University School of Business and Economics, is looking for ways to strengthen that voice. Her research question is: How can you make Dutch people aware of their pension situation and encourage them to secure their future income?


Why investors are embracing sustainability

Previously, assistant professor of Finance Paul Smeets showed that investors are willing to invest in sustainable funds and projects even if this leads to lower financial returns. Last summer he received a Veni grant for a far-reaching new study on the motivations of sustainable investors.


Remko Wessels knew exactly what he wanted when he signed up in 1986 for the brand new International Management programme at Maastricht University: an international career. Twenty five years on, there can be no doubt that the mission is accomplished. The Limburg native embarked last summer on his fifth international challenge for Unilever. We Skyped with him in Singapore.


Collecting music had long been a hobby of Peter Bollen’s, but it turned into a true labour of love when he starting hunting down and restoring music clips from TopPop. Over the years the television broadcasters turned out to have wiped countless clips, a disproportionate number of them featuring Dutch artists. "Cleaning up clips and restoring them to their full glory gives me a real kick."


In August 2015, alum Dirk Janssen was appointed as the Dutch ambassador to Panama. Via Business Economics at Maastricht University (UM), a stint in a consulting firm and a career at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Janssen ultimately ended up in the international environment to which he most aspired.


Alum Naomi Neijhoft is a Child Protection Officer for UNICEF. She assists the Cambodian government in protecting children from violence, exploitation, neglect and abuse.


First UM MOOC is a hit

MOOCs are all the rage in education today. Virtually every self-respecting university offers several Massive Open Online Courses, accessible to all and almost always free of charge. Millions of people from all over the globe participate in such courses. Last autumn, Maastricht University (UM) jumped on the bandwagon with its MOOC on Problem-Based Learning (PBL).
