Moskowitz Prize for UM researchers

Companies that have a good handle on their environmental management pay millions of euros less when financing themselves with debt than companies with questionable environmental practices. This is the outcome of a study by PhD candidate Daniel Hann and his promoter Professor Dr. Rob Bauer from the Maastricht University School of Business and Economics. Theirresearch is one of the first to demonstrate the effect of environmental management on the costs of corporate bonds. For this, it has been awarded the American Moskowitz Prize for Socially Responsible Investing from the renowned Haas School of Business in Berkeley.

The future and trends of tourism at the South Pole

Antarctica is synonymous with an almost mystical peace and wide open spaces. These days, around 30,000 tourists visit the continent every year, and this number is constantly increasing. Could it rise to a million by the year 2030? It remains to be seen whether ‘peace and wide open spaces’ are still typical characteristics by then. What will the consequences of this be for Antarctica? And what are the future trends? Machiel Lamers is currently investigating these questions as part of his PhD research at the UM. And in his spare moments, he is writing a song about Stanley, the first housefly to set foot on Antarctica.

Economist studies experiments with sustainable transport

The present transport system on the basis of individual use of cars and freight traffic is not exactly ecological and leads to a lot of nuisance and victims. In Europe, in the last years, there has been an interest in alternatives, and there are experiments with sustainable transport. However, these experiments often remain tentative and the initiatives do not lead to structural changes. The Maastricht economist René Kemp investigated, in cooperation with colleagues from Universiteit Twente, how this can be improved.
