The history of Dutch psychiatry

There are some studies of Dutch psychiatry, but many subjects still have not been treated. Therefore, there is no good overview of the development of the 'Nederlandse Geestelijke Gezondheidszorg (GGZ) (Netherlands Mental Health Care) in the twentieth century. This was enough reason for the Maastricht historian dr. H. Oosterhuis and prof. dr. M. F. Gijswijt-Hofstra from the Universiteit van Amsterdam to start a research project in 1999: The disturbed psyche.

Cannabis not so innocent at all

Increased risk of psychotic disorder

Hashish is known as a relatively innocent drug. Maastricht research shows the contrary: regularly smoking a joint can lead to lasting psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia.
