UM alumnus Floris van Wanroij debuts at TEFAF
  
Alongside the internationally renowned galleries featuring masterpieces by Van Gogh and other artists, this year’s TEFAF will feature pieces curated by Floris van Wanroij Fine Art. Newcomer Floris van Wanroij, a UM alum, will present pieces from his collection of Old Masters and late medieval sculptures. “TEFAF is the best platform you could have.”

Landing a job is tricky these days, especially for young university graduates. Still, you shouldn’t give up on your dreams: in life’s very unpredictability, you may find your path. Alinde Verhaag,head of case analysis at Eurojustin The Hague, is the perfect example.

Armand Lumens studied international management in Maastricht University’s early years. Back then, Problem-Based Learning was brand new, an unknown entity, and he and his fellow students were pioneers. “My teachers were young and passionate; I learned to solve problems and to work with others.” As it turns out, his time at UM kicked off a fantastic career: the Limburg native is now a top executive at Shell.

It all started in Maastricht: Taking to the stage for the first time while still a student of Health Sciences. Overcoming her shyness to perform her own songs at Studium Generale’s Open Podium nights. And one thing led to another. She won the Grote Prijs van Nederland at the annual Dutch music awards in 2003, performed on the talk show De Wereld Draait Door and at the Dutch music festival Lowlands and released three albums. In her own words, “choosing is the hardest thing there is” – but singer/songwriter Marike Jager seems to have chosen exactly her own path.

Esther Tromp is a lawyer in the Netherlands and Germany.
Her activities for the German Desk at Boels Zanders are often cross-border in nature. “I work on both sides of the border, trying to understand the two nationalities not only from a legal standpoint but also an intercultural one. Building bridges and helping people cross borders is what I do.”

Helmut Warmenhoven graduated from Maastricht University in 1996 as a business economist specialising in international management. But he is far from your traditional manager. By way of Palestine, Brussels and Thailand he made his way to China, where he teaches English and German at a university and is about to start a PhD in … anthropology.

Esther Baaijens spent 10 years in various marketing and commercial positions before founding The Pricing Company. “Companies weren’t really bothering with price management”, says the UM alum of her motivation at the time. “And there were no professional consultancies around that were 100% focused on pricing. I filled a gap in the market.”
